Hicksville Water District to Begin Spring Flushing on Evening of April 19

April 2, 2026

Critical Maintenance Practice Will Conclude on April 24

The Hicksville Water District (HWD) will be flushing water mains throughout its service area as a part of its regular Distribution System Maintenance Program starting on April 19 through April 24. Work will be done between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. to minimize the impact on the community. The flushing will be focused in the northeast quadrant of the District service area, which is east of Broadway and north of Old Country Road. Residents should remember that their water is absolutely safe to drink during this period.

“The quality of our water mains is crucial to ensuring that our residents continue to receive the high-quality water service they have come to expect,” said HWD Chairman William Schuckmann. “We flush out portions of our water mains every spring and fall to clear them of any sediment that may have built up, ensuring that water can flow through them easily. Our crews work at night and the very early morning to minimize disturbance to residents. While there may be variations in water color or pressure, your water is entirely safe to drink during this process.”

The HWD regularly flushes its water mains to protect the integrity of the water supply and to continuously provide residents with high-quality water. Flushing allows the District to guard against possible accumulation of dissolved iron in water mains that has occurred during the past year. The flushing program also provides an opportunity for the District to check for leaks and test water pressure. Additionally, the HWD is able to determine the water’s pH level and chlorine residual, as well as reviewing flow rates with respect to fire protection needs, adding to its importance in the District’s water distribution practices.

Slight variations in water pressure or color may occur during the flushing process, the latter of which may affect certain water uses such as laundering of clothes. If the water in your home does become discolored, it can be solved quickly by running your cold-water faucets until the water clears up.
