Schuckmann Starts Fourth Term as HWD Commissioner
The Hicksville Water District (HWD) is proud to announce that Commissioner William Schuckmann has been reelected to the HWD Board of Commissioners following the District’s election on December 12. Commissioner Schuckmann has served on the Board since 2014 and was sworn in to his fourth term on January 9.
“It is an honor to have once again been elected by my fellow community members to serve on the Hicksville Water District Board,” said Commissioner Schuckmann. “Serving my community as District Commissioner has been an incredible part of my life and something I consider to be a true privilege. I am tremendously proud of the work we have done here at the HWD during my tenure on the Board and I am greatly looking forward to advancing our District operations during my next term.”
Commissioner Schuckmann began working at the Hicksville Water District long before his first term on the Board, working at nearly every level of the District’s operations. He began as a laborer in the 1970s before serving as a foreman for much of his career. His employment at the District culminated in being named District Superintendent in 1998, a role in which he served until his retirement in 2009. During his time on the Board, Commissioner Schuckmann has played a crucial role in all District operations, including overseeing the District’s rapid installation of state-of-the-art treatment systems to address the threat posed by emerging contaminants in the District’s water. Through his combined leadership with his fellow commissioners and HWD Superintendent Paul Granger, the HWD’s efforts have been successful, as it currently has nine wells providing clean drinking water to its nearly 50,000 residents.
Commissioner Schuckmann’s leadership in the water industry is not exclusive to the HWD, as he has previously served as President of the Nassau Suffolk Water Commissioners Association. He is also tremendously active in the Hicksville community outside of the HWD as well. A member of the Hicksville Volunteer Fire Department for over 50 years, he has served as Company Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Chief and Chief. He was elected to serve three five-year terms as Fire Commissioner following his tenure as Chief. He also has been fundamental in fundraising for the Hicksville community, assisting in local charity golf outings and raising funds for various community nonprofit organizations and local families in need through the Hicksville Boys and Girls Club. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Hicksville Chamber of Commerce and is also on the Board of Directors of the Hicksville-Jericho Rotary Club, for which he previously served as president in 2001 and 2006. Commissioner Schuckmann also received the Rotary Club’s Paul Harris Award in 2022, marking the second time he received the honor.
