EyeOnWater Software Allows Owner to Solve Water Waste Issue

The Hicksville Water District places a strong emphasis on communicating with its residents and local business owners on all things related to their water service. This includes helping to uncover the reasons behind abnormalities in water use. There is no better example than the help recently provided by the District to the Hicksville Diner, which saw its water usage drop by 90 percent from October of last year to this January.

In October, the diner’s owner, Steve, reached out to the District to report dramatic spikes in his water bill. His diner had used more than 247,000 gallons of water in October alone, a number which was substantially greater than it had been in the past. Steve met with the HWD’s Board of Commissioners to discuss a solution, and he was advised to install the EyeOnWater app, which monitors your water use and helps to detect the reasons for abnormalities. After an investigation, two leaks were identified, and Steve and the District immediately addressed them.

“The Hicksville Water District places a great deal of pride in our efforts to work with our community to solve their water-related problems, and this is a true success story,” said HWD Chairman Nicholas Brigandi. “It was great to see Steve come to us when he noticed his abnormally high water use and it was a pleasure to help him fix it. We encourage all our residents to install the EyeOnWater app so they can identify leaks as soon as they occur and address them before they get out of control.”

The two leaks were found to be taking place in the ice machine and in the walk-in cooler. Steve had the walk-in cooler repaired and replaced the water-cooled ice machine replaced by an air-cooled machine. The conservation results were staggering, and only three months later, the diner is down to using approximately 33,000 gallons in January. Not only is this a nearly-90 percent savings in its water use, but going from Tier 5 rate to a Tier 3 rate which means that the diner will be spending considerably less on its next quarterly water bill in April.

“When we saw the sharp increase in our water bill, we knew that something was wrong,” said Steve. “The Hicksville Water District was a huge help in helping us correct our issue and we are grateful for their assistance.” Since installing the EyeOnWater App on his phone, Steve has been routinely using the app to monitor its water usage and loves the technology.

Leaks, as proven by this case, can often go undetected for quite some time regardless of how substantial they might be. Thousands upon thousands of gallons of water can be lost without residents or business owners even knowing, which is not only bad for our water source, but also for your wallet. This is why the District encourages everyone who lives and works in Hicksville to download EyeOnWater.
