Hicksville Water District Re-Elects Karl Schweitzer as Commissioner, Swears in Nicholas Brigandi as Chairman

Hicksville, New York(January 18, 2016) – During the public board meeting on January 12, 2016, the Hicksville Water District proudly inducted Karl Schweitzer to serve his fourth term as Commissioner. The Hicksville community re-elected Schweitzer during its December 2015 public election. As a Commissioner, Schweitzer has been instrumental in maintaining high-water quality by restoring existing water systems and adding additional treatment systems.

“I truly thank the community for this privilege to continue to serve as a Hicksville Water District Commissioner,” said Commissioner Schweitzer. “I look forward to another productive term, during which the District will continue to invest in treatment systems to improve the infrastructure of our water supply by holding polluters accountable and making the best financial decisions for our community.”

The District also announced Nicholas Brigandi as Chairman of the Board of Commissioners. A member of the Board since 1980, Brigandi has overseen many changes to improve the infrastructure of Hicksville’s water supply.

“It is an honor to serve another term on the Board for the Hicksville Water District,” stated Chairman Brigandi. “I have dedicated the last three decades in over-seeing the well-being of our water supply, and as a grandfather of four, it’s important our community invests in the future of our water supply.”

Commissioner Schweitzer has held a multitude of leadership positions in Hicksville and has been honored as Citizen of the Year by the Hicksville Chamber of Commerce in 1998 and by the Hicksville Community Council in 2006. Schweitzer has volunteered with the Hicksville Fire Department for the last 34 years, serving as Chief from 1996 to 1997. Additionally, Schweitzer has assisted on a variety of local projects including the restoration of the Gregory Museum, the Centennial Celebration of the Hicksville Fire Department and the 350th Anniversary Celebration of the Robert Williams Purchase.

Schweitzer holds an affiliation with many professional organizations and surrounding water districts. He led the Nassau/Suffolk Water Commissioners Association (NSWCA) as its president in 2007 and currently serves as treasurer. He was also appointed President of the Long Island Special District Association (LISDA) in 2009 and Chairman of the Long Island Water Conference (LIWC) in 2011. He also recently served on the Long Island Commission on Aquifer Protection (LICAP). Additionally, Schweitzer received appointments at the national level of the American Water Works Association (AWWA) to the Health, Safety, and Security Committee; the Public Officials Committee; and the Emergency Environment Committee. He remains active on the AWWA’s Emergency Preparedness and Public Officials Committee.

Schweitzer holds a bachelor’s degree in safety engineering. Professionally, he manages the worker safety and environmental activities at a large seam, gas and electric utility in New York City. Previously, he worked for KeySpan Energy (formerly LILCO) as a power plant safety supervisor and for Grumman Aerospace in its corporate safety division.

In addition to the Hicksville Water District, Brigandi holds memberships in American Water Works Association, Long Island Water Conference, and Nassau-Suffolk Water Commissioners Association.
