Clear Snow and Ice from Fire Hydrants

January 26, 2015

The Hicksville Water District Board of Commissioners Chairman Karl M. Schweitzer and Hicksville Fire District Board of Commissioners Chairman Scott E. Skrynecki remind residents to make certain that fire hydrants on their properties are kept clear of snow and ice at all times. Homeowners must make sure hydrants are easily accessible in order to ensure the community’s volunteer firefighters can hook up to the water source in an emergency without delay.

“Hicksville residents can make a significant difference and even save lives by taking just a few minutes to clear a fire hydrant from snow or ice,” said Hicksville Water District Chairman Karl Schweitzer. “In case of an emergency, it is crucial that these hydrants are not blocked in any way so our volunteer firefighters can access them immediately if necessary.”

The Hicksville Water District and Fire Department also ask residents to lend a hand to elderly or disabled neighbors, friends or family members when clearing hydrants on their properties if they are not able to do so on their own.

“In order to extinguish fires and save lives, it is essential that we can quickly locate and access the nearest fire hydrant,” said Hicksville Fire District Chairman Scott E. Skrynecki. “The first and most critical task our firefighters face when responding to a fire emergency is securing a water supply. Hicksville residents can help the fire department protect our neighbors by keeping fire hydrants visible and accessible.”

Access to fire hydrants is crucial all year round. Residents are reminded to not place garbage cans and to not park their vehicles around hydrants during any time of the year.
