Conservation is Crucial to Water Infrastructure
With the weather reaching the hottest temperatures of the year, the Hicksville Water District (HWD) wants to remind residents to conserve water throughout the summer. Water conservation is crucial 365 days a year but especially so during the summer, primarily due to the dramatic increase in water use by lawn irrigation systems. It is important to follow all Nassau County and HWD irrigation regulations throughout the season in order to protect our water source and infrastructure.
“Irrigation systems operating throughout the summer require water providers to pump much more water than during other times of the year,” said HWD Chairman William Schuckmann. “This can place a significant strain on our water infrastructure and sole-source aquifer, making it more difficult to meet the heightened demand for water. Your lawn only needs one inch of water per week in order to stay healthy, and we urge all residents to engage in these simple and effective water conservation measures to help protect our most precious natural resource.”
Following Nassau County’s Odd/Even Lawn Watering Ordinance is essential in conserving water while watering your lawn. The ordinance indicates that homes and businesses with odd-numbered addresses can only water on odd-numbered calendar days. Conversely, homes and businesses with even-numbered addresses, as well as those with no address numbers, can only water on even-numbered calendar days. Additionally, there is no watering permitted between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., as these are peak evaporation times and result in a large amount of water waste.
The Hicksville Water District has regulations on hose usage as well. All hoses for exterior water use must be fitted with a hand-operated automatic-off nozzle valve. The hosing of driveways, sidewalks and streets is strictly prohibited.
