Hicksville Water District Superintendent Simplifies the Groundwater Cycle for Second Graders on School Trip

Hicksville, N.Y. (June 20, 2016) –
A group of second grade students from Lee Avenue Elementary School recently visited the Hicksville Water District to learn where water comes from. During the visit, Superintendent Anthony Iannone explained the groundwater cycle, before giving students a behind the scenes tour of Plant #8 to learn about various water topics, such as water conservation, water quality and water distribution systems.

“The children were very excited to learn about the water cycle process and how the water gets from the ground into their homes,” said Miss. D’Antonio, second grade teacher at Lee Avenue Elementary. “They especially enjoyed the “ice cream float” comparison for the groundwater cycle. Superintendent Iannone simplified a difficult concept so that the second graders could understand it. All in all, it was a wonderful experience to see the children in the community learning how things work. We are very grateful to the Hicksville Water District for adding in our curriculum.”

Superintendent Iannone and approximately 75 students discussed various ways to conserve water and protect the environment for future generations to have an adequate supply of water. Boys and girls offered examples of things they can do to conserve the water supply, including turning the faucet off while brushing their teeth or taking shorter showers.

“The District truly enjoyed having the students from Lee Avenue visit. It’s never too early to teach young students about where their water comes from and discuss how they can help make a difference in the future water supply,” said Chairman Nicholas J. Brigandi. “The children have a lot of knowledge about the water cycle they learn in the classroom, but our educational tours provide a rare opportunity to have our District personnel share in-depth information.”

Students also learned how District employees monitor the water supply from a remote location and viewed a well which draws water from 600ft beneath the ground. Superintendent Iannone led the group along a route the water travels so students could follow the process the water goes through before being distributed to their homes.
