Hicksville Water District officials remind community of upcoming hydrant flushing, which may result in temporary water discoloration or loss of pressure

Hicksville, NY (April 1, 2016) — The Hicksville Water District Board of Commissioners recently announced the District’s annual hydrant flushing program schedule, which is intended to remove potential rust and sediment buildup in an effort to maintain water quality in the distribution pipes. The flushing program of the District’s fire hydrants will begin on Sunday, April 3 at 9:00 p.m. and continue to 5:00 a.m. each day with the last installment on April 15. During this time, residents may experience temporary water discoloration or lower-than-usual water pressure.

Flushing will be done in Zone 2, as depicted on the map.

“Flushing fire hydrants is an essential part of our District’s ongoing maintenance efforts to ensure our entire water supply system is working properly,” stated Board of Commissioners Chairman Nicholas J. Brigandi. “We assure residents that the hydrant flushing program will not in any way interfere with our fire department’s ability to connect to the hydrants and maintain sufficient water pressure in the event of an emergency.”

Along with clearing the pipes of sediment buildup, the annual hydrant flushing program also helps the District test the effectiveness of its infrastructure by checking for visible and audible leaks, testing water pressure, determining flow rates and checking overall operations as well as water clarity.

“Residents may experience lower water pressure than usual during the flushing in their area,” added Commissioner Karl Schweitzer. “Maximum water pressure should be restored within 15 minutes. Should residents encounter discolored water conditions, please know that it is safe to drink. Simply run the cold water for about five minutes to clear up the water.”
