The Hicksville Water District Board of Commissioners recently announced the completion of a new nitrate system for Plant 1 as part of the five-year capital improvement plan. Plant 1 features two wells that collectively pump up to four million gallons of water per day. The District is implementing facility upgrades to increase operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

“These capital improvements are designed to enhance our water purification process and ensure that Hicksville residents continue to receive the highest quality water possible,” added Commissioner Schweitzer. “The District is committed to getting the most value out of our facilities because we recognize the long-term benefits of operating to the best of our ability.”

The new nitrate system will proactively prepare for higher levels of nitrates should they occur at the Plant 1 site due to past agricultural maintenance and private septic systems prior to the public sewer system. The Hicksville water supply continues to be safe to drink and treated levels detected at the plant are far below New York State Department of Health standards.

In an effort to improve infrastructure, the District also replaced two air-stripping towers that were almost 30 years old with new, state-of-the-art towers. Keeping cost in mind, Hicksville commissioners also decided to replace well pumps with higher efficiency units.

“It’s important to continually monitor our facilities and test water quality in order to provide our residents with the best quality water at the lowest possible rates,” said Commissioner Karl Schweitzer. “We are confident that these projects will increase our efficiency and respond to higher demand as we move into high-usage months.”
