Hicksville Water District Cautions Residents About Exterior Water Service Line Repair

December 15, 2014

The Hicksville Water District Board of Commissioners cautions Hicksville residents and business owners about recent home solicitations by HomeServe USA. HomeServe USA, a repair service contractor selling repair service insurance, claims to certify the protection of the exterior water service line, or lateral line. Lateral lines are the water pipes that run through private property to connect water service provided by the Hicksville Water District to the plumbing in homes and businesses. Home and business owners are responsible for costs in maintaining certain portions of the water service laterals and repairs to water leaks, blocked pipe or pipe break that run through the property, similar to maintaining own landscaping and driveway. The Hicksville Water District in no way endorses the service or HomeServe USA.

“Hicksville residents must be careful when considering repair service insurance,” said Nicholas Brigandi, Chairman of the Hicksville Water District. “Replacing lateral water lines can be costly and homeowners may already have adequate coverage from their homeowner’s insurance policy. They should check with their agent.”

The exterior water service line can fail at any time. Residents are responsible for the lateral line from the curb to their home, including the meter pit.

Residents should research that contractor independently to make their own decision and contact their insurance company which carries their homeowner’s insurance policy. The Board of Commissioners encourages residents to do their due diligence and read insurance policies before signing any contracts.
