Former Captain of the Hicksville Fire Department and Commissioner of the Hicksville Water District

Emergency Company 5 of the Hicksville Fire Department and the Hicksville Water District are saddened to announce the passing of Commissioner Warren Uss on July 15, 2014.

In September 1972, Warren Uss, a 3rd generation Hicksville resident, joined the Hicksville Volunteer Fire Department as a member of Emergency Company 5. Passionate and hardworking, Warren quickly became involved in the Company. As a result of his dedication, Warren was elected Secretary in 1977, a position he would hold for many years over his 42 plus years of service.

Throughout his tenure as Secretary, members of Company 5 recognized Warren’s impeccable leadership skills. In 1989, Warren was elected to serve as 1st Lieutenant. From there, he rose through the ranks and was elected the Captain to serve Company 5 in 1991 and again in 1992. It was during this period that Warren led the membership through some of its busiest times.

Throughout his time with the Hicksville Fire Department, former Captain Uss also served several years on the By-law, Welfare and Budget Committees, using his extensive knowledge of fire service laws and financial experience. Warren was also a member of the Exempts Benevolent Association, where he served as a Trustee for many years and was elected by his peers to serve as President in 1995 and 1996.

In 2008, Warren Uss was elected by the community to serve on the Board of Commissioners of the Hicksville Water District, where he was currently Chairman of the Board. Commissioner Uss was an integral member of the District, playing an active role in the development and oversight of the first Nitrate Water Treatment facility in New York State. Commissioner Uss also played a pivotal role in the rehabilitation and construction at Plants 1 and 6. Warren was an active member of the American Water Works Association, Long Island Water Conference and the Nassau Suffolk Water Commissioners Association.

Outside of serving his community, Warren could be found coaching his daughter’s basketball team at Trinity Lutheran, enjoying mornings at the golf course and participating in a bowling league. Warren’s professional career spanINned more than four decades, first as a licensed representative on the New York Stock Exchange, and then as business owner, operating a home improvement business for many years. Warren would eventually retire as an employee of the Hicksville Fire District in 2011. Warren is survived by his wife Dianne, their daughter Alexandra and his dear sister Maureen (Uss) Bensen and his brother John and his wife Maryann. Warren is also survived by his mother-in-law, Dolores Sartor and his sister-in-law Linda Schoepfer (Steve) and many nieces and nephews. Warren will be deeply missed by his family, friends and colleagues, past and present. There were religious and firematic services held at McCourt & Trudden Funeral Home and a Mass of Service of remembrance and Thanksgiving at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hicksville.
